Comparative and Interdisciplinary Research on Asia
The Comparative and Interdisciplinary Research on Asia was established in 2000 to promote research and publications at the Asia Institute. The program collaborates in part with the Asia Institute's Chinese, Japanese, Korean, East Asian, and Southeast Asian studies centers toward promoting comparative, interdisciplinary, and theoretical work on Asia.
Latin American Studies
The Latin American Studies Program is one of the most extensive and diverse Latin American and Iberian academic programs in the country. The program offers courses in the professional schools, humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, and the fine arts. Students in the program participate in the array of programs and activities that focus on Latin America at UCLA.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Program at UCLA is an interdisciplinary program that supports teaching and research on the historical and contemporary experience of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people. The program provides an academic home for those who wish to study the intellectual and cultural traditions that have shaped our current understanding of sexuality and gender, as well as for those who wish to challenge such traditions and generate new theoretical paradigms. The minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies offers undergraduates the opportunity to study sexuality and gender from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.
Indo-European Studies
The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Indo-European Studies focuses on Indo-European linguistics and specialized language study in individual languages and language areas. In addition, the program provides an integrated understanding of Indo-European culture, based on comparative linguistics, archaeology, social structure, religion, mythology, and poetics.
International Development Studies
Founded in 1987, the International Development Studies Program is designed for students interested in careers or vocations requiring an understanding of the diverse development experiences of the world. The Program offers UCLA undergraduates an interdisciplinary education on the critical issues, problems, and achievements common to developing regions of the world.
Israel Studies
The Israel Studies Program is committed to the study of Israel across the disciplines. The program focuses on three goals in order to promote a firm understanding of Israel: the enhancement of both undergraduate and graduate instruction; the hosting of both visiting and permanent faculty; and programs and conferences on campus and in the community.
South and Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures
South and Southeast Asian Languages & Cultures (SSEALC) is a branch of East Asian Languages & Cultures. The program is dedicated to the study of the major languages and the civilizations of the region extending from the Indian subcontinent to Mainland and Insular Southeast Asia.
Study of Religion
The Interdisciplinary Department for the Study of Religion offers courses on non-literate and ancient religious traditions, Western and Near Eastern religious traditions, and south Asian and East Asian religious traditions.
Women's Studies Program
UCLA’s Women’s Studies Program is an interdisciplinary field that grew out of the recognition that the experience and potential of over half the world’s population should have real consequences for academic study and teaching, research and scholarship. The Women’s Studies Program currently has close to 150 undergraduate majors and over 40 minors, 17 Ph.D. candidates, and dozens of affiliated faculty from many areas of the University such as English, Modern Languages, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Education, Law, Biology, Theater.
